Abstract:

An illuminating apparatus of one embodiment of the present technology is provided with an illuminating optical system that generates illuminating light, and a plurality of lenses that reduce divergence angle of the illuminating light. The illuminating optical system has a light source (20) that radiates light to an end surface of a first substrate or a second substrate, and an optical modulation layer (30) that is provided in a space between the first substrate and the second substrate. The illuminating optical system has electrodes, which generate, in three-dimensional display mode, an electric field that generates a plurality of linear scattering regions (30B) in the optical modulation layer (30), and which generate, in two-dimensional display mode, an electric field that generates a planar scattering region in the optical modulation layer. The lenses are disposed by being aligned with each other in the direction in which the linear scattering regions extend, and are also disposed by being aligned with each other in the direction that intersects the direction in which the linear scattering regions extend.
