Abstract:
Provided are a lighting device that can provide high brightness and a display device provided with the same. The lighting device is provided with an illumination optical system that generates illuminating light and a lens sheet that narrows the scattering angle of the illuminating light. The lighting optical system has a first transparent substrate and a second transparent substrate that are disposed separated and facing each other and a light source that shines light to an end surface of the first transparent substrate or second transparent substrate. The illumination optical system is provided in the gap between the first transparent substrate and the second transparent substrate, and has an optical modulation layer that exhibits scattering characteristics or transparent characteristics for light from the light source according to the size of an electric field. The illumination optical system generates an electric field that produces a plurality of linear scattering regions in the optical modulation layer during a three-dimensional display mode and also generates an electric field that produces planar scattering regions in the optical modulation layer during a two-dimensional display mode.
