Abstract:

This invention provides an electric double layer capacitor comprising a polarizable electrode layer comprising an activated carbon, an electroconductive auxiliary material, and a binder. The electric double layer capacitor is characterized in that the external specific surface area of the activated carbon (the specific surface area being a value obtained by subtracting micropores having a pore diameter of less than 20 Å as calculated by a t-plot method using a nitrogen adsorption isothermal curve) is in the range of 450 to 800 m2/cm3 per unit volume of the polarizable electrode layer, and the volume based on spacing among the particles per unit volume of the polarizable electrode layer is in the range of 0.05 to 0.12 cm3/cm3. The electric double layer capacitor is particularly suitable for large-current and rapid discharge applications.
