Abstract:
Provided is an electrode catalyst layer containing: a catalyst material; a conductive carrier for carrying the catalyst material; a polymer electrolyte containing a sulfonic acid group; and a fibrous material. The electrode catalyst layer has a first surface contacting a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, and a second surface facing the first surface. When the electrode catalyst layer is analyzed by means of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) for each of a plurality of positions in the thickness direction of the electrode catalyst layer from the first surface to the second surface, the first value is defined as the value obtained by dividing the peak intensity of SO3 (m/z 80) by the peak intensity of carbon (m/z 12) and the total thickness of the electrode catalyst layer. The rate of change of the first value with respect to the thickness of the electrode catalyst layer is −0.0020 or less.
