Abstract:
This electrode catalyst layer includes a first surface configured to be bonded to a solid polymer electrolyte membrane in the membrane electrode assembly, and a second surface on the opposite side from the first surface. The electrode catalyst layer is composed of a first portion in the form of a layer including the first surface, and a second portion in the form of a layer including the second surface and being laminated on the first portion. The electrode catalyst layer includes a first catalyst including platinum, and a second catalyst formed of a transition metal oxide. The catalytic activity of the first catalyst is higher than that of the second catalyst. The density of the first catalyst in the electrode catalyst layer is highest at the region including the first surface in the first portion. The maximum value of density of the first catalyst in the second portion is smaller than the minimum value of density of the first catalyst in the first portion.
