Abstract:
An electrode catalyst according to the present invention comprises: a mesoporous carbon carrier that has pores; and catalyst metal particles that are supported by at least a part of the inside of each pore of the carrier. The catalyst metal particles are formed of an alloy of platinum and at least one transition metal that is selected from among group 3 elements and group 12 elements of the periodic table. The average alloying degree of the electrode catalyst is 40% or more as calculated by formula (1). The ratio r/R of the average particle diameter r of the catalyst metal particles to the mode pore diameter R of the mesoporous carbon carrier is 0.20 to 0.95. Formula (1): Alloying degree (%) = ((lattice constant of alloy as calculated from XRD) - (lattice constant of platinum))/((theoretical value of lattice constant of alloy) - (lattice constant of platinum)) × 100
