Abstract:
The present invention provides a novel and improved metal-air battery in which a catalyst can be disposed in a large amount at the interface among three phases and which can hence have improved battery properties. The metal-air battery according to the present invention includes an air electrode including a catalyst layer, the catalyst layer comprising a catalyst ingredient and carbon materials. The carbon materials comprise two materials, i.e., a carbon material A on which the catalyst ingredient is supported and a carbon material B on which the catalyst ingredient is not supported. The catalyst layer has a structure which comprises an aggregate phase X comprising the catalyst ingredient, the carbon material A, and some of the carbon material B as major components and an aggregate phase Y comprising some of the carbon material B as the main component, the aggregate phase X being continuous and the aggregate phase Y being dispersed in the aggregate phase X.
