Abstract:
When an image signal is darker than a specified level, it is subjected to linear gray scale conversion. The dark areas of an image are thereby not distorted and the feeling of gradation of the shade and hair is reproduced sufficiently. On the other hand, when the image signal becomes brighter than the specified level, it is subjected to nonlinear gray scale conversion. The nonlinear gray scale conversion satisfies the conditions: 1) it has a slope to substantially equalize the means noise amplitude of the image signal regardless of the output gray level and 2) it is offset to be continuous with the gray scale conversion characteristic of the gray scale conversion section for dark area . The level-dependent noise in the bright area is equalized according to the condition 1). Furthermore, difference of gray level and reversal of gray scale do not occur at the boundary of dark and bright areas under the condition 2).
