Provided are a handwriting input apparatus in which the configuration of an electronic pen is simple and which can be formed at a low cost. This handwriting input apparatus is provided with: an electronic pen; and a position detection device part in which, below a magnetic sheet in which the color of a position approached or contacted by a magnetic pole is changed, a position detection sensor of an electromagnetic induction type is disposed so as to be superimposed on the magnetic sheet. The electronic pen is provided with: a coil; a magnetic body core that has this coil wound therearound and has a through hole in the axial center direction; a capacitor that constitutes a resonance circuit with the coil; and a core body that is inserted through the through hole of the magnetic body core. The core body has magnetic poles at a pen tip part and a tail end part on the opposite side to the pen tip part, respectively. The pen tip part is configured to project outwardly from an opening of a housing of the electronic pen and be located at a position away from an end portion on the pen tip side in the axial center direction of the magnetic body core. The position detection sensor of the position detection device part exchanges, with the resonance circuit of the electronic pen, a signal at a frequency corresponding to a resonance frequency of the resonance circuit through electromagnetic induction coupling.
