An elevator apparatus according to the present invention is provided with: a pair of engagement chains that are connected to a car and that move the car in the raising and lowering direction by being driven such that the orientation of the chains is changed from the horizontal direction to the vertical direction or from the vertical direction to the horizontal direction; a drive device that drives the pair of engagement chains; a guide device having a guide member that is attached, in a raisable and lowerable manner, to the pair of engagement chains in a self-supporting state and is cylindrically formed so as to partially encircle the pair of engagement chains and having a support member that is attached to a pair of guide rails in a raisable and lowerable manner so as to support the guide member; and a guide device operation member that, when the car is raised and lowered at a position higher than a predetermined height, raises and lowers the guide device in association with the raising and lowering of the pair of engagement chains, and that, when the car is raised and lowered at a position lower than or equal to the default height, holds the guide device at a retracted position not interfering with the car being raised and lowered.
