Provided are a replacement device and method for replacing which make it possible to replace the main rope of an elevator even when it is not possible to ensure sufficient working space on the elevator landing. A replacement device (20) is equipped with a first protective part and a second protective part. The first protective part is positioned to the front of a door device (18). The door device (18) is provided in the upper section of the front surface of the car (9) of the elevator (1). The first protective part guides the existing main rope (8) which is collected inside the car (9) in a first direction from above the car (9). The first protective part restricts the approach toward the door device (18) of the existing main rope (8) in the normal direction which is perpendicular to the first direction. The second protective part is positioned to the front of the door device (18). The second protective part guides the new main rope (8) drawn from inside the car (9) in a second direction to an area above the car (9). The second protective part restricts the approach toward the door device (18) of the new main rope (8) in the normal direction which is perpendicular to the second direction.
