Abstract:
Conventionally, to encode a digital image signal, an appropriate amount of information is allocated to an edge portion. Therefore, the reduction of the amount of information is limited, and accordingly the encoding efficiency is low. An evaluating section of an encoder evaluates a characteristic (the degree of correlation between pixels) by using a predetermined evaluation function, transmission pixels are determined according to the characteristic, and resultantly the order of random scanning is determined. A differential encoding section differentially encodes the image in the order of scanning determined. A multiplexing section multiplexes the differential encoding output from the differential encoding section.
