Abstract:
An end mill is configured in such a manner that the wear of the clearance face of a long bottom edge at the tip of the end mill body is effectively prevented and that chips which are produced by the long bottom edge is smoothly discharged. Bottom edges (9) are formed at the ridge lines where tip clearance faces (8) and gashes (7) intersect, the gashes (7) being formed at the front ends of chip discharge grooves (4) which are formed in an end mill body (1). At least one of the bottom edges (9) is a long bottom edge (9A) which extends further toward the inner peripheral side than the remaining bottom edges (9B, 9C). Coolant holes (10) are formed in the end mill body (1) at positions between the chip discharge grooves (4). A coolant hole (10A) which is located between a chip discharge groove (4A) which leads to a gash (7A) along which the long bottom edge (9A) is formed and a chip discharge groove (4C) which is located behind the chip discharge groove (4A) in the rotational direction (T) of the end mill is open at the tip clearance face (8A) of the long bottom edge (9A). A coolant hole (10B) which is located between the chip discharge groove (4A) leading to the gash (7A), along which the long bottom edge (9A) is formed, and a chip discharge groove (4B) located in front of the chip discharge groove (4A) in the rotational direction (T) of the end mill is open to the gash (7A), along which the long bottom edge (9A) is formed.
