Abstract:
A method of performing a ventriculostomy includes creating an access site (14) in a lumbar region (12). A guidewire (112) is inserted into the access site (14). A sheath (120) is introduced over the guidewire (112), into the access site (14), and the tip (124) of the sheath (120) is positioned in a subarachnoid space (30). A first catheter (150) and a second catheter (180) are introduced through the access site (14). The first catheter (150) and the second catheter (180) are guided proximate to a ventricle membrane (48) of a ventricle (50). A hole is created in the ventricle membrane (48) and at least one of the first catheter (150) or the second catheter (180) are advanced through the hole. The hole in the ventricle membrane (48) is dilated. Contrast is injected into the ventricle (50) to confirm cerebrospinal fluid is draining into a subarachnoid cistern (52).
