Abstract:
An endotracheal tube and suction catheter system (10) having an inflatable cuff (14) with a unique shape, collection pocket (30) formed by the inflatable cuff (14) and a unique railing system (20) for controllably guiding a suction catheter (23) along the tube (12) and into or proximal to the pocket (30). The cuff (14) and pocket (30) facilitate the collection of pooled secretions that accumulate in the trachea area. Pooled secretions are collected in the cuff pocket (30) and the cuff (14) may be pitched toward the pocket (30) or have a concave hemispherical design at the posterior pocket end and, or a convex hemispherical design at the anterior end to further urge pooled secretions into the pocket (30). The cuff (14) preferably has an elongated parallelogram-like shape to counter the rocking phenomenon caused by a patient coughing or turning.
