Abstract:
In an internal combustion engine, an NOx adsorption catalyst (12) is arranged in an exhaust gas passage of the engine, and an NOx selective reduction catalyst (14) is arranged in the downstream of the NOx adsorption catalyst (12). Right before the air/fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx adsorption catalyst (12) is temporarily switched from lean to rich for discharging NOx from the NOx adsorption catalyst (12), NOx necessary for removing ammonia adsorbed onto the NOx selective reduction catalyst (14) is supplied to the NOx selective reduction catalyst (14) at a lean air/fuel ratio.
