Abstract:
An expanded graphite-made knitting yarn for a gland packing used in shaft seal portions of a fluid apparatus, wherein an expanded graphite tape (2) of a preset width is longitudinally bent in a trough form, the opposite ends (2a, 2b) in the width direction of this tape (2) are bent so as to face inward in the width direction of the tape (2), the outer periphery of the tape is covered with a reinforcing material (3) consisting of a stainless-wire braided element. The expanded graphite tape (2) may be twisted, may have reinforcing fibers embedded therein, or may have part of expanded graphite particles on the front surface thereof removed therefrom. The expanded graphite tape (2) can reduce or prevent the possibility of flaking of expanded graphite particles at braiding, and enhance the pressure resistance of a gland packing.
