Description:
EXTENSION OF A BICYCLE CRANK DURING THE PUSHING PHASE The present invention concerns an improvement of the stretching devices for bicycle pedaliers in the pushing phase, which has already been claimed in the preceding International patent application no. PCT/IT99/00097 and in Italian patent application no. RM99A00041 by the same inventor.

In said preceding patent application, a stretching device for the pedaliers, in particular for racing bicycles, has been claimed that determines an increase of the arm of the force applied to the pedals and a following increase of the moment transmitted to the wheels for exalting the efficiency of the push on the pedal.

Following experimental realizations and working tests have shown that said device had some difficulty in overcoming the dead points during the running of the pedals and little variations in the rotation continuity.

It is the aim of the present improvement fa overcome above mentioned functional inconveniencies of the preceding device bv means of a different structure and funcional coupling of the components of said device.

The aim set forth is reached by means of an improvede device according to the present invention, comprising: -pedaliers provided with housings for containing bearings kept in position by a blocking bottom, and with extroversions with bushings for carrying the pedals; -bearings, contained inside said pedaliers, provided with passing-through holes, eccentric to the geometrical centre of the same, such as to allow the insertion thereof onto the bicycle's hub, and with passing-through holes such as to allow the application of the same onto supports on the frame of the bicycle, by means of known blocking means; -lever arms, having the fulcrum on the hub's pin, provided with movable tabs longitudinally sliding in grooved guides by means of linear bearings; -movable tabs, sliding on lever arms, linked to the pedaliers by the insertion of pedal-carrying bushings in the passing- through holes at the ends thereof ; -a crown shaped in such a way as to allow the working of said pedaliers and said lever arms without interfering with the shift group and with the transmission gear usually provided on racing bicycles.

The present invention will be described more in detail hereinbelow relating to the enclosed drawings, in which an embodiment is shown.

Figure 1 shows a left lateral view of a stretching device for the pedaliers according to the present invention, applied to a racing bicycle B ; figure 2 shows, in a right lateral view, an axonometric exploded view of said stretching device; figure 3 shows an exploded axonometric view of the pedaliers of the device according to the present invention; figures 4,5,6 and 7 show the different possible stretching and shrinkage positions that may be obtained by the pedaliers in resting, pushing and return of said pedals P.

The enclosed figures show a stretching device for bicycle pedaliers in the pushing phase, consisting of: -pedaliers 1 with housings 2 for containing bearings 6 kept in position by a blocking bottom 3, and with extroversions 4 with bushings 5 carrying pedals P ; -bearings 6, contained inside said pedaliers 1, provided with passing-through holes 7, eccentric to the geometrical centre of the same, such as to allow the insertion thereof onto the hub M of a bicycle B, and with passing-through holes 7 such as to allow the application of the same onto supports 8,9 on the frame T of the bicycle B, by means of known blocking means 10 ; -lever arms 11, having the fulcrum on the pin P of the hub M, provided with movable tabs 12 longitudinally sliding in grooved guides 13 by means of linear bearings 14; -movable tabs 12, sliding on lever arms, 11 linked to the pedaliers 1 by the insertion of pedal-carrying bushings 5 in the passing-through holes 15 at the ends thereof ; -a crown C, shaped on purpose in such a way as to allow the working of said pedaliers 1 and said lever arms 11 without interfering with the shift group and with the transmission gear usually provided on racing bicycles; -a fork F carrying the driving wheel of the bicycle B, with stems having lateral notches 16 that will not hinder extroversions 4 carrying the pedals P during the rotation of the pedalier 1.

For what concerns the working of the device improved according to the present invention, the push on the pedals P determines the rotation of the pedaliers 1 around the bearings 3 contained therein, linked to the frame T of the bicycle B, and of the lever arms 11 around the pin P of the hub M of said bicycle.

Due to the different rotation centres, the distance between the ends of the extroversions 4 carrying the pedals P and the fulcrum of the lever arms 11 tends to increase in the pushing phase on the pedals and to decrease in the return phase, determining a proportional sliding of the tabs 12 on the lever arms, as the latter are linked to said extroversions 4 by the pedal-carrying bushings 5 inserted in the end holes 15.

The sliding of the tabs 12 on the lever arms 11 therefore determines, in the pushing phase, a global stretching of the lever arms that determines an increase of the arm of the force applied to the pedals P, and therefore a consequent increase of the moment transmitted to the wheels, as well as a shrinkage of the same in the return phase.

Furthermore, as it has been shown in figures 4 to 6, the movable tabs 12, linked to extrversions 4 of pedaliers 1 to the pedals P, will force the latter to assume, when they reach the push phase, a position that allows the maximum exploitation of the force exerted to the pedals and that prevents, at the same time, possible mechanical blocks of the system.
