Title:
FLETTNER ROTOR SAIL
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2011/103870
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
Conventional Flettner rotors which produce an appreciable forward thrust and are used as the main or auxiliary wind-powered drive have considerable dimensions and may substantially impair the loading or unloading operation on ships or may cause an unintentionally high traveling resistance when there is no wind. The aim is to provide a space-saving folding mechanism for the hollow cylinder (1). For this purpose, the hollow cylindrical shape is approximated by lamellar part segments (2). The lamellar part segments (2) are rotatably mounted by means of bearings (3) in two planes (4) and (5) which form the cover and the base area of the cylinder. The two cylinder planes (4) and (5) delimit the top and the bottom of the cylinder. The folding process (cf. Fig. 1 to 3) reduces the dimensions of the initially comparatively tall cylinder (1) to only a fraction of its original size and thus allows its use as a space-saving main or auxiliary wind-powered drive on ships.
