The present invention provides a flow pattern regulator for a water-based drilling fluid. The flow pattern regulator is prepared by carrying out a polymerization reaction on the following raw materials: 10-40% of a first monomer, 40-70% of a second monomer, 10-40% of a third monomer and 0.5-3% of a fourth monomer, wherein the first monomer is acrylamide, the second monomer is acrylic acid or sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate, the third monomer is N-vinyl pyrrolidone, and the fourth monomer is sodium undecylenate, 1-undecylenamide mea, octadecyl dimethyl allyl ammonium chloride, 2-acrylamido hexadecyl sulfonic acid or divinyl benzene. The present invention further provides a preparation method for the flow pattern regulator for a water-based drilling fluid. The preparation method comprises preparing a reaction system, carrying out a polymerization reaction and drying, and crushing treatment. The flow pattern regulator for a water-based drilling fluid of the present invention has the advantages of temperature resistance and salt tolerance.
