[Problem] To provide a gas sensor that makes it possible to improve both water contact resistance and responsiveness with a single protector. [Solution] A gas sensor 1 comprising a sensor element 21, at the tip side of which is formed a detection part for detecting a detection target gas G, a main body fitting 11, and a protector 51 which is in the form of a single tube and which is fixed around the main body fitting at the tip side thereof, wherein: the protector has a gas inlet hole 56 and a gas outlet hole 53 that is disposed more to the tip side than is the gas inlet hole; the main body fitting has a fixing part 13 that directly or indirectly fixes, to the outer surface of the fixing part 13, piping 100 through which the detection target gas flows, and an instrument engagement part 14 that is positioned at the rear end side of the fixing part, that is for attaching the gas sensor, and that has a large diameter; the distance L1 between the gas inlet hole and the gas outlet hole in an axis O direction is greater than the distance L2 between the instrument engagement part and the gas inlet hole in the axis direction; and the tip 21a of the sensor element is positioned more toward the tip side than is the gas inlet hole.
