This heat exchanger is provided with: a main heat exchanging unit; at least one first sub-heat exchanging unit; a distributor that distributes a working fluid being guided to the main heat exchanging unit, to a plurality of paths; a first valve mechanism that is provided to a header; a first pipe from which the working fluid enters and exits; and a second valve mechanism that is provided between the main heat exchanging unit and the first sub-heat exchanging unit. The first sub-heat exchanging unit has heat transfer pipes the number of which is less than that in the main heat exchanging unit, and has formed therein working fluid paths the number of which is less than that in the main heat exchanging unit. The first valve mechanism is provided, in the header, between a main area to which the heat transfer pipes of the main heat exchanging unit are connected and a sub-area to which the heat transfer pipes of the first sub-heat exchanging unit are connected, and allows the working fluid to flow only in the direction from the sub-area toward the main area. The second valve mechanism allows the working fluid having entered from the first pipe to flow only in the direction from the first pipe toward a side where the distributor and the first sub-heat exchanging unit are disposed.
