Description:
A HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE ARM SYSTEM FOR FURNITURE'S AND

AUTOMOBILES SEATS

FIELD OF INVENTION

The present invention relates to the field of a height adjustable arm system for furniture’s and automobile seats. More particularly the present invention relates to adjusting the height of the arms for furniture and apparatuses for positioning and adjusting the arms of furniture’s and automobile seats,

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Seating customization has been a fast growing area of interest for many to have more comfort. This customization may include the application of adjustable arms of various heights in the desired areas of chairs, sofas, recliners, automobile seats, indoor and outdoor furniture.

The development of various actuators and lifting devices recently, have been adapted to provide height adjustable arms. Height adjustable arms offers several advantages over fixed arms including facilitating the person who is sitting to adjust the arm height of the Chair, sofa or the furniture he is sitting on, to his body’s convenience and can also adjust the furniture arms for his various sitting positions during his sitting time and for children to adjust the arms of the furniture he is using to their arm height and for lactating mothers to adjust the height and position of their arms by the support of the height adjustable arm of the furniture they are using during breast feeding their babies. However, the adjustment also requires a stepless adjustment in order to ensure that the arms position is best suited for the user and the feeding position is comfortable for both the baby and the mother.

Certain conventional methods are followed for adjusting the arm height by providing pillows etc. These conventional methods doesn’t provide the right height or position as its not adjustable sleeplessly.

These conventional methods suffer many drawbacks like requiring an external support to assist positioning of the arms. In many cases the external helping hand is not always available. Another drawback in the conventional method is that the arm height can only be raised using pillows or similar items but cannot be lowered than the existing height of the furniture like chair or sofa being used. This adjustable mechanism is configured to increase or decrease the height of the arms steplessly, and therefore, functions to guide the user's hand up or down as per the required convenience level of the person so that even children can use the standard size furniture comfortably and without much strain in their posture or for mothers during breast feeding the baby. Since humans vary in shape and size, it is unable to accommodate every persons need to position the hand on the arm of the furniture they are using to the correct posture especially in families having children it is difficult for the children to use the arms in the right posture as most of the furniture are manufactured for adult seating except exclusive children study room furniture. For physically challenged persons where there is a need to transfer a person from the cot to the sofa it is very difficult to transfer the person by carrying him and transferring to the chair or sofa with both arms of the sofa or chair staying in its position. (Whereas with the Height adjustable arm system the arms can be lowered and the person can be shifted without hindrance) All of aforesaid disadvantages work together to increase the difficulty in positioning the persons arms in a comfortable position.

Therefore, a need exists in the field for novel arm positioning devices and apparatuses capable of positioning the arms of chairs, sofas recliners, arm rests in automobiles and other indoor and outdoor furniture in various places like, home, office, hospitals, hotels etc..

Finally, for steplessly and gradually moving the Furniture arm there is also a need for proper guides to be configured to conform for the smooth movement of the device to adjust the finer requirements of the person using the furniture, especially children and to avoid disturbance to the lactating baby.

The present invention relates to a height-adjusting mechanism for armrest that enables easily adjustment of an armrest to a desired height relative to a seat in any type of furniture with arms, simply by operating the remote or by wireless devices like blue tooth etc, to move the armrest to a desired position. There are different designs of armrests for furniture’s. But there are no mechanisms to steplessly adjust armrests to different heights, so that users can sit on the armchairs more comfortably and the armchairs will become more valuable.

The present invention will now be described by referencing the appended figures representing preferred embodiments. FIG. I depicts an exploded view of the elements that may comprise of the arm height adjustable device (the "device") for furniture according to various embodiments of the present invention. In preferred embodiments, each of the elements of the device are configured with at least one Linear actuator 11, which is configured to move the arm up and down , of which one end is connected to the fixed guide 10 which is fastened to the chair outer support 1 and the other end to the movable arm jointer 12. One side of the slider set 9 is fixed to the chair outer support 1 and the other side to the chair inner arm to provide frictionless sliding movement of the arm. One side of another slider set 9 is fixed to the chair inner arm 8 and the other side to the guide 10 to provide frietionless sliding movement of the arm. When the button for the upward motion is pressed on the remote 18 for power operated Linear Actuator then the linear actuator piston extends pushing the arm up to the position, desired by the user or to the uppermost position of the arm.

Then when the user wants to have a lower height of the arm he/she can press the downward motion button in the remote 18 so that the piston or the moving member of the Linear actuator contracts pulling the movable arm downwards till the desired position is reached or to the lower most position of the arm. The linear actuator has built in limit switches to stop the linear actuator in the upper/lower most positions. Once the piston reaches either the uppermost or lowermost positions then the piston can only be reversed from that point. Thanks to the built in circuit of the linear actuator.

The height adjustable arm is configured with a guide member 10 which is capable of guiding the adjustable arm in a slot.

As perhaps best shown in FIG. 1, the linear actuator is to be positioned along the vertical axis of the arm between the inner arm 8 and outer arm 15 and the arms are to be secured by staplers or with the help of bonding chemicals or screws in case of wood, by welding or fastening by fasteners in case of metals at distances from each other that allow the complete arm to be intact. This Assembly can then be guided into the slot.

In preferred embodiments, the chair inner arm bottom part is inserted in the slot between the fixed guide 10 and the chair outer support 1 which maybe fixed to one side of the slider 9. The other side of the slider shall be fixed to the chair, sofa or any other furniture that requires height adjustable arms. The other side of the chair inner arm maybe fixed to one side of the sliders 9. The other side of the sliders shall be fixed to the guide 10. In some embodiments, the arms of various widths and heights may be positioned as per the requirements of the end user. The chair inner arm member is connected to the outer arm through jointers 12 at lengths as per the choice of the user. However standard length of 150 mm is also available. The fixed part of the Linear Actuator is fastened to the guide l0 and the end of the movable part is fixed to the jointer 12 through suitable fasteners.

It is to be understood that the present form of disclosure is merely for the purpose of illustration and that there might be various modifications thereof, without departing from the spirit of the invention as herein set forth.

The Linear actuators may be driven by electric power, pneumatically, hydraulically, by stepper motors etc. Arm guides and arms may be made of wood, metal, plastic or any other materials by which furniture is manufactured, may have the profile as shown in the drawing or modified to suit the dynamic needs of the user. The telescopic drawer guide/sliders may be ball bearing type, smooth contact type, roller type etc.

The arm requires multiple components (the "elements") to slide freely along the height of the chair

While preferred materials for elements have been described, the device is not limited by these materials.
