Description:
PAT 107

A HERBAL FORMULATION TO ENHANCE POULTRY IMMUNITY Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to a herbal formulation to enhance poultry immunity.

The herbal formulation according to present invention is prepared by using bark of Bombax ceiba and fruit of Capsicum frutescens. Background of the Invention

The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other invaders. Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease. The immune system is highly complex and important to well-being. A strong and balanced immune system is required for health maintenance. Using natural agents, it is possible to help restore an immune system imbalance or weakness. Nutrient deficiency is a well-known cause of immune system malfunction. Bombax ceiba belongs to family bombacaceae. It is also known as semal in hindi. It shows the presence of glycosides and tannins from root, stem and leaf. In the stem some alkaloids and in root proteins are identified ."The stem bark contains lupeol and β-sitosterol . The root bark has 3 -naphthalene derivatives related to gossypol (toxic principle of cotton seed) and called as 'semigossypol'. Flowers contain β-sitosterol , traces of essential oil, kaempherol and quercetin. On hydrolysis gum yield arabinose, galactose, galacturonic acid and rhamnose.

The gum has aphrodisiac, astringent, demulcent, haemoptysis of pulmonary tuberculosis and influenza, malaena and menorrhagia and acute dysentery with beneficial results. Flowers are used for haemorrhoids. Root has stimulant, tonic and aphrodisiac properties. PAT 107

Capsicum frutescens belongs to family solanaceae. It is also known as chili in Hindi or commonly cayenne pepper.

The hotness produced by chili is caused by its high concentration of a substance called capsaicin. Technically referred to as 8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide, capsaicin has been widely studied for its pain-reducing effects, its cardiovascular benefits, and its ability to help prevent ulcers. Capsaicin also effectively opens and drains congested nasal passages.

In addition to their high capsaicin content, chilies are also an excellent source of vitamin A, through its concentration of pro-vitamin A carotenoids including beta-carotene. Beta- carotene is not only a potent antioxidant in its own right, but can be converted in the body to vitamin A, a nutrient essential for the health of all epithelial tissues. Beta-carotene may therefore be helpful in reducing the symptoms of asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, its antioxidant activity make it useful in preventing the free radical damage that can lead to atherosclerosis, colon cancer, and diabetic complications, like nerve damage and heart disease.

All chili peppers, including cayenne, contain capsaicin, which in addition to giving cayenne its characteristic heat, is a potent inhibitor of substance P, a neuropeptide associated with inflammatory processes. Capsaicin is being studied as an effective treatment for sensory nerve fiber disorders, including pain associated with psoriasis, arthritis and diabetic neuropathy. When animals injected with a substance that causes inflammatory arthritis were fed a diet that contained capsaicin, they had delayed onset of arthritis, and also significantly reduced paw inflammation.

Topical capsaicin has been shown in studies to be an effective treatment for cluster headaches and osteoarthritis pain. Several review studies of pain management for diabetic neuropathy have listed the benefits of topical capsaicin to alleviate disabling pain associated with this condition.

Cayenne and other red chili peppers reduce blood cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and PAT 107 platelet aggregation, while increasing the body's ability to dissolve fibrin, a substance integral to the formation of blood clots.

Capsaicin not only reduces pain, but its peppery heat also stimulates secretions that help clear mucus from your stuffed up nose or congested lungs. Capsaicin is similar to a compound found in many cold remedies for breaking up congestion, except that capsaicin works much faster. A tea made with hot cayenne pepper very quickly stimulates the mucus membranes lining the nasal passages to drain, helping to relieve congestion and stuffiness.

Chili peppers like cayenne contribute' to stomach ulcers. Not only do they cause ulcers, these hot peppers may help prevent them by killing bacteria one may have ingested, while powerfully stimulating the cells lining the stomach to secrete protective buffering juices that prevent ulcer formation. The use of cayenne pepper is actually associated with a reduced risk of stomach ulcers.

Cayenne pepper is an excellent source of vitamin A. It is also a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and dietary fiber. Objective of the Invention

In order to fully illustrate the invention, following examples are set forth. It is to be understood that the examples are only by way of illustration and are not intended as an undue limitation on the broad scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Example 1

75 g Bark of Bombax ceiba and 25 g fruit of Capsicum frutescens. are washed with water and PAT 107 grinded to obtain small pieces of bark and fruit. The ground bark and fruit pieces are mixed with 100 mL of water and boiled for 15 minutes at 110° C. The boiled mixture is cooled at room temperature followed by filtering to obtain the resulting decoction. The final decoction is fed to poultry at a dose of 50 mL daily for 7 days. Result

The birds exhibiting clinical signs like greenish diarrhea, white diarrhea, inappetite, nasal discharge, drop in egg production were treated with the herbal formulation (Table 1). The plant formulation will enhance the general vitality of the birds thereby promoting general immunity. The various clinical trials indicate the efficacy of herb for major clinical symp- toms affecting birds.
