Abstract:
One embodiment described herein provides an optical add-drop multiplexer. The optical add-drop multiplexer can include a plurality of network interface modules and an optical cross connect module coupling the plurality of network interface modules. The plurality of network interface modules can include at least a first network interface module comprising a first optical component from a first vendor and a second network interface module comprising a second optical component from a second vendor. The first and second optical components have different optical parameters. One more embodiment provides an optical network that includes a plurality of interconnected optical add-drop multiplexers, including both homogeneous optical add-drop multiplexers and heterogeneous optical add-drop multiplexers. A heterogeneous optical add-drop multiplexer can include at least a first network interface module comprising a first optical component from a first vendor and a second network interface module comprising a second optical component from a second vendor.
