Provided is a high-pressure discharge lamp light-up device, wherein wearing out of a pair of electrodes of the high-pressure discharge lamp can be alleviated, and expansion of the distance between the electrodes can be alleviated, in comparison to conventional high-pressure discharge lamps. The frequency of an AC current to be fed to the high-pressure discharge lamp (4) is switched between frequency (f1) and frequency (f2) that is higher than frequency (f1), and the amplitude of the AC current is switched between current value (I1) and current value (I2) that is greater than current value (I1). The high-pressure discharge lamp light-up device conducts a control wherein period-A during which the frequency is f1, and period-B during which the frequency is f2 are repeated alternately, by switching the frequency of the AC current, and wherein the amplitude of the current during period-a2 included within period-A is set to be current value (I2), and the amplitude of the current during period-a1 that is the remainder of period-A is set to be current value (I1).
