The present invention provides an HLS stream-based subtitle display method and device. The method comprises: transcoding a DASH media stream to an HLS stream, and transcoding a subtitle stream in the DASH media stream to a subtitle file in a picture encoding format (S102); downloading and playing back a video and audio file in the HLS stream by means of a player (S104); downloading and parsing the subtitle file by means of a subtitle parser to obtain subtitle display information (S106); and obtaining a current playback time of the player by means of the subtitle parser, and according to the subtitle display information, selecting corresponding subtitles and synchronously displaying same (S108). In the present invention, a subtitle stream in a DASH media stream is transcoded to a subtitle file in a picture subtitle encoding format, the subtitle file is downloaded and parsed by means of a subtitle parser, and synchronous display is performed, such that the problem that an IOS terminal does not support display of picture subtitles of a DASH stream is solved.
