Abstract:

Provided is a hollow shaft configured so that small-diameter sections (small-diameter sections having smooth outer peripheral surfaces) near the splines at the ends of the shaft have improved static torsional strength and fatigue strength and so that the hollow shaft has reduced costs. Also provided is a constant velocity universal joint using the hollow shaft. A hollow shaft (1) is formed by the plastic forming of a tubular material and is quenched and hardened. The quenching and hardening are performed by carburizing and quenching. After the carburizing and quenching, softened sections (M) are formed in portions of the hollow shaft by local heating.
