A honeycomb structure having a number of flow cells which are separated from one another by partition walls and pass through in the direction of axis, characterized in that it comprises refractory particles as aggregates and one or more elements selected from the group consisting of rare earth elements, alkaline earth elements, Al and Si, has crystals containing one or more of these elements, and is porous. The honeycomb structure contains refractory particles such as silicon carbide and simultaneously can be prepared with a relatively low firing temperature at a reduced cost, has satisfactorily great porosity and specific surface area, and thus can be suitably used, for example, as a filter for clarifying an automobile exhaust gas and a catalyst carrier even under high SV conditions.
