Abstract:
Provided is a catalyst characterized in that: a metal component containing a first component, which is rhenium, and one or more types of second components selected from a group consisting of silicon, gallium, germanium and indium is supported on a carrier; and said carrier is a carrier containing a metal oxide in group 4 of the periodic table. Also provided is an alcohol production method in which a carbonyl compound is treated by using this catalyst. By causing a hydrogenation reaction of the carbonyl compound, it is possible to suppress side reactions and produce alcohol in a highly selective and efficient manner.
