Abstract:
This ignition device for an internal combustion engine in which a piston 13 is housed in a cylinder 12 of a cylinder block 11 in such a manner as to be reciprocally movable, and a cylinder head 14 is disposed on the top of the cylinder block 11 is provided with: a housing 21 which is attached to the cylinder head 14; an insulator 22 housed and held in the housing 21; a columnar center electrode 24 which has an upper end side being housed in the insulator 22 and has a lower end side being exposed from the insulator 22 and protruding into the cylinder 12; and a recess 25 which is recessed from the top surface of the piston 13 in the piston axial direction, and which receives, with a predetermined gap, at least a part of the center electrode 24 at the top dead point of the piston 13, and in which spark discharge occurs between the inner surface of the recess 25 and the outer surface of the center electrode 24 when voltage is applied to the center electrode 24.
