Abstract:
A phase difference film (30) has a thickness (d1) of 7 µm or less, and satisfies (i) 100 nm ≤ Re1 ≤ 200nm and (ii) Nz1 ≤ 6. When d1 is the thickness of the phase difference film, nx1 the index of refraction in the direction of the slow axis in the plane of the film, ny1 the index of refraction in the direction of the fast axis in the plane of the film, and nz1 the index of refraction in the direction of thickness, Re1 and Nz1 are defined respectively as Re1 = (nx1 - ny1) × d1 andNz1 = Rth1/Re1, where Rth1 = (nx1 - nz1) × d1. An image display device (100) is provided with the phase difference film (30) more to the viewing side than a polarizer (11) disposed on the viewing side of an image display cell (5). In the image display device (100) provided with the phase difference film (30), reduction in visibility because of blackouts and rainbow phenomena when viewing a screen through polarized sunglasses is suppressed.
