An image reproducing apparatus for reproducing coded image data and a recording/reproducing apparatus are disclosed. Special reproduction such as arbitrary-times speed and special recording/reproduction are easily carried out. A packet information creating section (23) creates packet information containing a presentation time stamp PTS included in the packet header of an MPEG stream and the file address of the packet header. A control section finds the reproduction position of the MPEG stream based on the packet information referenced by a packet information referencing section (25), reads the corresponding MPEG stream from an information storage section (24), and outputs the MPEG stream to a decoding section (26), which decodes the MPEG stream and outputs the decoded MPEG stream.
