Title:
INK CARTRIDGE FOR AUTOMATED DISPENSING SYSTEMS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2001/045952
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
An improved cartridge (10) for dispensing highly viscous fluids having a recessed nozzle (34) for ease of packaging, shipping and storing. The cartridge (10) comprises a hollow cylindrical body (18), a plunger (22) and a dispensing fitment (24). The cylindrical body (18) holds a supply of extrudable fluid contents such as lithographic ink. The plunger (22) acts as a pneumatically activated piston within the cylindrical body (18) to extrude the contents of the cartridge (10). The nozzle (34) has an open and a closed position. In the closed position the nozzle (34) does not extend beyond the top of the dispensing fitment (24). The dispenser (10) may also include a detachable nozzle extension (60) that, when attached to the nozzle (34), extends beyond the top of the fitment (24).

Claims:
WE CLAIM AS OUR INVENTION:
1. In a cartridgetype dispenser (10) comprising a hollow cylindrical body (18) for holding a supply of extrudable fluid contents, the cylindrical body (18) having a dispensing end (20) and a plunger end (19), the plunger end (19) being closed by a plunger (22) adapted to serve as a piston within the cylindrical body (18) to extrude the contents of the dispenser (10) when the plunger (22) is forced toward the dispensing end (20), the dispensing end (20) terminating in a rim (21), the improvement comprising: a generally cupshaped dispensing fitment (24) mounted in sealing engagement with the dispensing end (20) of the cylindrical body (18), said dispensing fitment (24) comprising: a substantially circular disk (26); an annular side wall (28) formed around the periphery of the disk (26) and extending upwardly therefrom toward the rim (21) and terminating in a top end; a flange (30) extending radially outwardly from the top end of the annular side wall (28) and abutting the rim (21) of the cylindrical body (18), said flange (30) defining a plane; an aperture (32) disposed approximately at the center of the disk (26) communicating with the inside of the cylindrical body (18); and a reclosable nozzle (34) formed over the aperture (32), said nozzle (34) having an open and a closed position, wherein the nozzle (34) in the closed position does not extend beyond the plane defined by the flange (30).
2. The dispenser of claim 1 further comprising a detachable nozzle extension (60) that, when attached to the nozzle (34), extends beyond the plane defined by the flange (30).
3. The dispenser of claim 2 wherein the nozzle extension (60) forms a snap fit over the nozzle (34).
4. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the cylindrical body (18) is made substantially from convolutely wound paper lined internally with polymeric material.
5. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the dispensing fitment annular side wall (28) is glued to the inside of the cylindrical body (18).
6. An ink cartridge (10) for use with a sheet fed lithographic press, the cartridge (10) comprising: a hollow cylindrical body (18) having a bottom end (19) and a top end (20); a pneumatically controlled plunger (22) inserted into the bottom end (19) for sliding engagement with the hollow cylindrical body (18); a generally cupshaped dispensing fitment (24) mounted in sealing engagement with the top end (20) of the cartridge body (18), said dispensing fitment (24) having a radially extending flange (30) that abuts the top end (20) of the hollow cylindrical body (18), said flange (30) defining a plane; and a nozzle (34) mounted on the dispensing fitment (24) and having an open and a closed position; wherein, in the closed position, the nozzle (34) does not extend beyond the plane defined by the flange (30).
7. The ink cartridge of claim 6 further comprising a detachable nozzle (60) extension that, when attached to the nozzle (34), extends beyond the plane defined by the flange (30).
