A latch device (1) provided to a door side of a vehicle comprises a catch (12) that engages a striker (2) so as to enable rotation in a latching direction toward a fully latched position and rotation in a releasing direction toward an unlatched position, a sector gear (13) that is caused to rotate by an actuator (3), a cinch lever (14) that is connected to the sector gear (13) and that comes into contact with a contact part (125) of the catch (12) to cause the catch to rotate in the latching direction, a pole (15) that restricts rotation of the catch (12) in the releasing direction, and a release lever (16) that releases the restriction by the pole (15) upon contact with the sector gear 13. One of the sector gear (13) and the cinch lever (14) has a groove (132, 143). When the catch (12) and the cinch lever (14) are in irregular positions, one end of the groove (132, 143) is open so that the sector gear (13) comes into contact with the release lever (16) to release the restriction of the catch (12) by the pole (15).
