Abstract:
A dictionary for judgement is generated by extracting stable features of color cover images of a series of issues of different periodicals. An input cover image of an unknow periodical is collated with the features in the dictionary so as to identify it, and the library information is updated. A cover image (901) is fetched, a character string and a background figure are extracted in color unit in a step (921) to determine the features of the input image. The steps 915 to 919 are repeated the number of times corresponding to the number (K)914 of the finite automaton expressed by the features extracted in advance from individual periodicals. First, the <u>p</u>th finite automaton is set (915), the features of the input image are inputted in their number to the finite automaton (916) and transition on the finite automaton is executed (917). When this transition is completed (918), the score obtained by the addition during the transition process and the periodical I.D. of the <u>p</u>th finite automaton are stored (919). After all the steps are finished, the input periodical is identified from the score stored (920). According to this method, unidentified periodicals delivered to a library can be automatically identified and the library information can be updated, so that the efficiency of library work is improved.
