A light source lamp lighting device according to the present invention is provided with a light source lamp, a cooling means for cooling the light source lamp, a switched-off time measuring unit for measuring switched-off time information indicative of the switched-off period from the last time the light source lamp was turned off to the present time, a storage unit for storing a lighting result which is a history of the success and failure of the past lighting of the light source lamp, a plurality of cooling times corresponding to the switched-off time indicated by the switched-off time information as a cooling time for operating the cooling means, and a first threshold defined with respect to the lighting result, and a control unit for retrieving the lighting result, the cooling time stored in the storage unit corresponding to the switched-off time measured by the switched-off time measuring unit and the first threshold, when lighting the light source lamp, and calculating a value of a cooling time for operating the cooling means by subtracting a given time from the retrieved cooling time if the number of successes of the lighting indicated by the lighting result exceeds the first threshold.
