A lighting apparatus for visible light communication is provided with a lighting apparatus body having a light source unit comprising an LED, and a visible light communication signal output unit for outputting a modulation signal to the lighting apparatus body. The lighting apparatus body is provided with a power source circuit unit for dimming and brightening the light source unit, a switching element for modulating the output current supplied from the power source circuit unit to the light source unit, a resistance connected in parallel with the switching element, and a photocoupler for receiving the modulation signal from the visible light communication signal output unit. The visible light communication signal output unit is positioned on the exterior of the lighting apparatus body, and transmits the modulation signal via the photocoupler. As a result of this configuration, only a small current for powering the photocoupler is sent to the lighting apparatus body from the visible light communication signal output unit; hence, it is possible to reduce radiation noise, easily ensure the insulation of the area where the signal is transmitted, and simplify the circuit configuration.
