Title:
LINEAR ARRAY OF LIGHT-EMITTING ELEMENTS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2000023976
Kind Code:
A9
Abstract:
A display (10) as for images and/or information comprises a plurality of linearly addressed substrates each in the form of an elongated fibre, disposed in side-by-side arrangement to define a viewing surface (22). Each substrate includes a plurality of light-emitting elements (150) disposed along its length which is linearly addressed by signals provided by a drive circuit (170) at one end thereof. Linear addressing signals are either optical signals or electrical signals, and may be frequency modulated, digitally encoded or analog encoded. A detector (180, 280) associated with each light-emitting element (150) detects the linear addressing signal and decodes same to activate and deactivate organic or inorganic light-emitting material (130). Thus, the light-emitting element (150) emits light to display a pixel or sub-pixel of the image and/or the information. The substrate may include a transparent fiber (10) for propagating the optical signals therethrough and may include an electrical conductor (160) disposed along its length for propagating the electrical signals.
