Abstract:
Provided is a liquid-crystal composition which satisfies at least one property selected from properties including a high nematic-phase upper-limit temperature, a low nematic-phase lower-limit temperature, a low viscosity, large optical anisotropy, large permittivity anisotropy, a high resistivity, high stability to ultraviolet rays, and high stability to heat or has an adequate balance between at least two of those properties. Also provided is an AM device having a short response time, high voltage retention, high contrast ratio, long life, etc. The liquid-crystal composition comprises a first component comprising specific tricyclic and tetracyclic compounds having a high upper-limit temperature and large permittivity anisotropy and a second component comprising a specific compound having a low viscosity or a high nematic-phase upper-limit temperature, and has a nematic phase. The liquid-crystal display device includes this composition.
