Abstract:
Provided are: a liquid crystal composition which contains a polymerizable compound (or a polymer thereof) and a polar compound, and which is capable of achieving a vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules by the action of these compounds; and a liquid crystal display element which contains this composition. This composition satisfies at least one of such characteristics as a high upper limit temperature, low lower limit temperature, low viscosity, adequate optical anisotropy, large positive dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability with respect to ultraviolet light or heat, and large elastic constant, or has an adequate balance among at least two of the above-mentioned characteristics. A nematic liquid crystal composition which contains as a first additive, a polymerizable compound, and as a second additive, a polar compound, and which has a positive dielectric anisotropy. This composition may also contain a specific liquid crystalline compound having a large positive dielectric anisotropy and a specific liquid crystalline compound having a high upper limit temperature or a low viscosity. A liquid crystal display element according to the present invention contains this composition.
