Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing: a liquid crystal composition that makes it possible to form a light-absorbing anisotropic film having a high degree of orientation and that contains a side chain-type polymer liquid crystalline compound having excellent solubility in common solvents; a light-absorbing anisotropic film obtained using the liquid crystal composition; a layered body; and an image display device. This liquid crystal composition contains a side chain-type polymer liquid crystalline compound and a dichroic substance. The side chain-type polymer liquid crystalline compound is a copolymer comprising a repeating unit (1) that includes a mesogenic group and that has a molecular weight greater than 280 and a repeating unit (2) having a molecular weight equal to or less than 280. The content of the repeating unit (2) relative to the total mass of the side chain-type polymer liquid crystalline compound is less than 14 mass% and the content of the dichroic substance relative to the total solid content of the liquid crystal composition is greater than 2 mass%.
