Abstract:
Provided is a VOT-type liquid crystal display element that has high transmittance and that can be driven with a low voltage. This liquid crystal display element 10 has: an active matrix substrate AM and a color filter substrate CF that are arranged so as to face each other; a liquid crystal layer 5 which is provided between the substrates AM, CM and which is composed of a liquid crystal composition; and a common electrode 21 and a pixel electrode 22 that are provided to the substrate AM and arranged so as to create an in-plane direction clearance therebetween that is smaller than the clearance between the substrates AM, CM. In this liquid crystal display element 10, the common electrode 21 is disposed on a side closer to the liquid crystal layer 5 than the pixel electrode 22, and a fringe electric field E is formed between the common electrode 21 and the pixel electrode 22. The liquid crystal composition comprises: a first liquid crystal molecule that has a negative dielectric constant anisotropy, while the absolute value of dielectric constant anisotropy is not less than 3 at 25°C; and a second liquid crystal molecule wherein the absolute value of dielectric constant anisotropy is not more than 2 at 25°C.
