A liquid crystal display panel (1) which displays a bar code composed of parallel black bars having various widths and arranged with various gaps therebetween by means of electrooptic effect of liquid crystal. A polarizing plate is provided on the side of the panel (1) where light is projected from a bar code reader. The direction of the transmission axis (P1) of the polarizing plate is aligned with direction of polarization of the light, and further is parallel or generally parallel to the long or short side of the individual bars constituting the bar code. The direction (M) of the major axis of liquid crystal molecules (LCM) in a first or second ferroelectric state is parallel, or generally parallel or at an angle of 45° or generally at angle of 45° to the direction of the transmission axis (P1) of the polarizing plate.
