Abstract:

Provided is a liquid crystal optical element which is provided with a first substrate part, a second substrate part, and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate part comprises a first substrate that has a first main surface and a first electrode that is provided on the first main surface. The first electrode extends in a first direction. The second substrate part comprises a second substrate that has a second main surface which faces the first main surface, and a first counter electrode. The first counter electrode is provided on the second main surface and covers the first electrode. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the first substrate part and the second substrate part. A first portion of the liquid crystal layer, said first portion being on the first substrate part side, is vertically aligned. A second portion of the liquid crystal layer, said second portion being on the second substrate part side, is horizontally aligned such that the major axis of each liquid crystal molecule extends in a second direction. Consequently, a liquid crystal optical element which enables easy-to-view display and a three-dimensional image display device are provided.
