Title:
LOAD BALANCING FOR FAST REROUTE BACKUP TUNNELS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2003062947
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
Load balancing among fast reroute backup tunnels (508, 510) in a label switched network (200) is achieved. M backup tunnels (508, 510) may be used to protect N parallel paths (502, 504, 406). A single backup tunnel (508, 510) may protect multiple parallel paths (502, 504, 406), saving on utilization of network resources such as router state and signaling information. A single path (502, 504, 406) may be protected by multiple backup tunnels (508, 510), assuring that bandwidth guarantees are met under failure conditions even when no one backup tunnel (508, 510) with sufficient bandwidth may be found. A packing algorithm is used to associate individual label switched paths (LSPs) with individual backup tunnels (508, 510). If an LSP cannot be assigned to a backup tunnel (508, 510), it may be either rejected, or additional bandwidth is allocated to existing backup tunnels (508, 510), or a new backup tunnel is established.
