Abstract:
Provided is a magnetic recording medium that makes it possible to obtain satisfactory electromagnetic conversion characteristics and suppress increases in friction. This magnetic recording medium is a tape-like magnetic recording medium, and comprises a substrate and a magnetic layer. The average thickness of the magnetic recording medium is 5.30 μm or less. The magnetic layer contains chlorine atoms and nitrogen atoms, and the atomic concentration ratio (A2/A1) of the maximum chlorine atomic concentration A1 obtained by measuring the chlorine atomic concentration of the magnetic layer in the thickness direction thereof and the maximum nitrogen atomic concentration A2 obtained by measuring the nitrogen atomic concentration of the magnetic layer in the thickness direction thereof is 0.50-0.75 inclusive. The average value of the protruding peak height Rpk of the surface of the magnetic layer is 2.10 nm or less.
