Abstract:
Provided is a marine propulsion apparatus which effectively uses surplus power to reduce operating costs and allows components to be arranged more freely within a ship body. The marine propulsion apparatus (1A) is provided with a drive power transmission mechanism which uses bevel gear units for changing the drive power transmission direction of drive shafts, and which transmits drive power from drive power sources disposed in the ship body to a propeller (3) of a pod (2). The marine propulsion apparatus (1A) is provided with a pair of electric motors (M) which are disposed onboard as the drive power sources. The drive power transmission mechanism drives the propeller (3) by transmitting drive power from a pair of onboard horizontal drive shafts (8), which are respectively connected to the electric motors (M), to a vertical drive shaft (9) by way of an onboard bevel gear unit (6) and, in addition, by transmitting drive power from the vertical drive shaft (9) to a horizontal drive shaft (10) in the pod by way of a bevel gear unit (7) in the pod.
