A material for treating a gas which comprises a composition containing a composite catalyst (A) having a photocatalyst TiO₂ (a₁) and, carried thereon, a platinum group elemment (a₂), a silica−based ceramic component (B), and preferably an alumina−based ceramic component (C). An acidic dispersion of a colloidal silica is preferably used as the source of the silica−based ceramic component (B), and an alumina sol is preferably used as the source of the alumina−based ceramic component (C)&semi and a method for preparing the material. The material for treating a gas not only has deodorizing capability against odor components and antibacterial capability against bacteria, but also exhibits a great speed in removing CO which is a harmful gas component, and maintains good performance capability for the removal of CO even in an atmosphere of a medium to high humidity, and further exhibits high capability for the removal of CO even when it is applied to an article or an article is impregnated with it.
