Provided is a medical device that is capable of appropriately protecting a guide wire to be inserted. A medical device (10) is for cutting an object in a lumen of an organism, and is provided with: a tubular drive shaft (20); a cutting part (40) fixed to the leading end of the drive shaft (20); a protective tube body (71) that is accommodated in the drive shaft (20) and in the cutting part (40), and that is rotatable relatively to the drive shaft (20); and a protective-side first stopper (72) that is disposed on the outer circumferential surface of the leading end portion of the protective tube body (71). The leading end portion of the drive shaft (20) or the cutting part (40) has a drive-side stopper (46) that is contactable with the protective-side first stopper (72). When the protective-side first stopper (72) is brought into contact with the drive-side stopper (46), the protective tube body (71) is restrained from moving axially with respect to the drive shaft (20) without being restrained from rotating relatively to the drive shaft (20).
